With cinemas closing and millions stuck at home in lockdown, this is the time for streaming services to ‘cash in’, by releasing fresh content.
If lockdown is going to last up to 12 weeks then April and May will need to be big months for the likes of Netflix, Amazon and Sky.
So here’s some selected highlights of what’s coming up in April!
Love, Wedding, Repeat (2020) – Netflix - Released 10 April
Director- Dean Craig
Is there anything better than a good British Rom-Com? Love, Wedding, Repeat drops onto Netflix on April 10 (Good Friday) and boasts an exciting cast of Sam Claflin (Me Before You, The Hunger Games), Olivia Munn (Office Christmas Party, Ride Along 2) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark, Collette).
Focusing on his sister’s wedding, Jack (Claflin) is hoping the day runs smoothly until an uninvited guest, ex-girlfriend and the girl-that-got-away show up. It looks like it’ll be an easy, humorous watch during the Bank Holiday.
Judging by the trailer’s opera theme, could we be seeing something similar to the hit BBC drama Fleabag?
Hustlers (2019) – Amazon Prime Video - Out Now
Director: Lorene Scafaria - 110mins - Age Certificate: 15
Hustlers, released the same weekend as the Downton Abbey movie, proved to be a moderate box-office success when it hit the cinemas last September.
Available now on Amazon Prime Video, Hustlers follows the story of Destiny (Constance Wu), a stripper in New York City, who loses her job due to the financial crisis.
Years later, she rekindles her friendship with fellow stripper Ramona (Jennifer Lopez) as they plot a way to exploit millionaire men for their cash.
Cardi B and Lizzo also feature in this excellent black comedy crime-drama. Many film critics also bemoaned Lopez’s snub of a Best Actress nomination at the major film awards this year.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) – Sky Cinema - Released 11 April
Director: Jon Watts - 129mins - Age Certificate: 12
The most recent film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with Sony owning the rights- you won't be seeing this film on Disney+, Spider-Man: Far From Home is released on Sky Cinema on 11 April.
Starting soon after the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is hoping to go on a stress-free two-week summer trip with his classmates to Europe.
However, Nick Fury is trying to get Peter to sign up to fight against some mysterious happenings going on across the continent.
Jake Gyllenhall plays Quentin Beck, as the MCU deliver again with another fantastically written and well-crafted film. Please watch the end credits, it’s a great moment for anyone who’s a big fan of Spider-Man.
Guy Movies Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Willoughbys (2020) – Netflix - Available 22 April
Director: Kris Pearn - 92mins - Age Certificate: TBC
Ricky Gervais voices a narrating cat in this upcoming Netflix animation, The Willoughbys, which follows the story of four children who think they’re better off living on their own than with their selfish parents.
The film apparently had a rather large budget and Netflix are expecting it to be quite the hit when it’s released on April 22. As the world binges on classic Disney animations on Disney+, here’s Netflix’s attempt to bring you back to their platform.
Featuring Will Forte (who will be voicing Shaggy in the in upcoming Scoob! animation), musician Alessia Cara and Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Grown Ups), The Willoughbys will certainly be a film to check out during lockdown.
21 Bridges (2019) – Amazon Prime - Available 22 April
Director: Brian Kirk - 100mins - Age Certificate: 15
Looking for a good police crime thriller to watch later this month? 21 Bridges is that film when it drops on Amazon Prime Video on 22 April.
Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) is a New York Police Department detective that must shut down all 21 bridges in Manhattan to find two suspected police killers.
Sienna Miller and J.K. Simmons also star in this movie that was released in cinemas in November 2019 – so a very quick turnout for it to be put on a streaming service.
Despite some low reviews, I enjoyed this film. The story is pretty good, Boseman is excellent and it paints the NYPD in not the greatest light; it’s certainly worth an hour and 40 minutes of your time.

Four Kids and It (2020) – Sky Cinema - Available Now
Director: Andy De Emmony - 110mins - Age Certificate: PG
Right…Four Kids and It is a film based on Jacqeline Wilson’s novel of the same name, that was based on E. Nesbit’s novel Five Children and It -that was turned into a film back in 2004.
Still with me? This family film was released straight onto Sky Cinema on 3 April and stars Michael Caine (who voices IT), Russel Brand, Paula Patton, and Matthew Goode.
The story follows four teenagers on a family holiday in Cornwall who discover an animal with magical powers.
I’ve not had chance to watch this, however early reviews are a mixed bag - but what else have you got to do at the moment?
Shoutout to our wonderful NHS and other key workers across the country during this difficult times. Stay Safe!
