Five Films to Watch on Amazon Prime during COVID-19

Writer's picture: Guy OwenGuy Owen

I think everyone has access to an Amazon Prime Video account. Some people are still reeling that they forgot to cancel their free trial at Christmas, others have signed up to Prime and not realised that the video service is included.

Amazon were the real winners last Christmas, introducing their Premier League coverage so people joined their Prime Membership, ordered their Christmas presents but completely forgot that they offered a video streaming service.

Apart from The Grand Tour and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, most of their original content hasn’t had the wide-range publicity Netflix has been able to receive.

The hardest part of Amazon Prime Video is finding out which movies you have to pay for and which are included in your membership.

Hint: Anything with a banner in the top left corner saying Prime is included, however if it doesn’t have that…you’ll have to pay to watch it.

Without further ado, here are five great films all included in the Amazon Prime Video for you to watch during self-isolation.

Best Picture: Green Book (2019)

Director – Peter Farrelly – 130mins – Age Certificate: 15

This biographical comedy-drama focuses on the life of iconic African-American pianist Don Shirley (Mashershala Ali) and his tour of the America’s deep-south during 1962. The Italian-American Frank 'Tony Lip' Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen – or Aragorn from Lord of the Rings), is hired as Shirley’s driver for the tour and to also has to act as his bodyguard.

The two men differ in class, colour and interests, and due to Shirley’s skin colour, he must spend nights in different and inferior hotels to Lip on many legs of the tour. Green Book is a beautiful film about friendship that also delves into the stereotypes of living in 1960s America.

The Best Picture winner at the Oscars in 2019, now it’s time to decide whether that was the right decision.

Guy Movies Favourite: Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

Director – Wes Anderson – 88mins – Age Certificate: PG

Some may laugh, some may wonder, but don’t judge until you’ve sat down and watched this Wes Anderson (director of Isle of Dogs and The Grand Budapest Hotel) adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s’ book.

The animation consists of several forms, but is mainly stop motion, and rather than the voices being filmed in a standard recording studio, Anderson got the stars to record them in settings that mirrored what was going on-screen.

George Clooney voices the cunning fox and Meryl Streep playing his wife, Felicity. The soundtrack, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score, also features classics tracks from The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys. I can also guarantee that you’ll get the Boggis, Bunce and Bean song stuck in your head for the rest of self-isolation.

The cinematography is beautiful, and if you really enjoy this, then Wes Anderson has a catalogue of quirky-but-remarkable films to digest with your upcoming free time.

Must Watch: The Imitation Game (2015)

Director – Morten Tyldum – 114mins – Age Certificate: 12

The Imitation Game is based on the incredible true story of cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who worked on cracking the German communications messages for the UK government during the Second World War, reportedly saving millions of lives in the process.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kiera Knightly and Charles Dance, The Imitation Game is a real must-see film that finally propels one of the country’s greatest minds into the deserved spotlight.

I don’t want to talk too much more about the character of Turing and the film, as he’s not exactly a household name. So, one time this week, sit down and watch this fantastic film about one of Britain’s most fantastic people.

Guilty Pleasure: Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008)

Director – Gurinda Chadha – 96mins – Age Certificate: PG

There’ll be some cheers, and maybe even more groans when people see this film on the list, but I’ve got my tin hat at the ready.

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a mid-noughties British-teen cult classic. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has forged an impressive Hollywood career, starring in hit movies such as Nocturnal Animals and Kick-Ass– he’s also set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster Tenet this summer. But, he’ll always be remembered as Robbie in this coming-of-age rom-com.

Adapted from Louise Renninson’s Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging and It’s OK, I’m Wearing Really Big Knickers, this 2008 hit follows Georgia Nicholson (Georgia Groome) during secondary school life as she aims to fit in with the cool kids, grab herself a good-looking boyfriend and throw the best party her school friends have ever seen.

Everyone needs cheering up during this period in history, and despite this film being nominated for a grand total of zero Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globe’s, it’ll still got a huge piece in every millennials heart. Not seen this film? Give it a go!

Guy Movies Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Award Winner: Room (2016)

Director – Lenny Abrahamsom – 118mins – Age Certificate:15

Another film based on a book adaptation – Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same title – sees Joy Newsome (Brie Larson), who’s held in captivity in a room for seven years, and during this period gives birth to her five-year-old son.

A film of two halves that explores life in the room and SPOILER ALERT, life outside of the room. As Jake (the sublime Jacob Tremblay) embraces life in the outside world, Joy struggles to adapt. This could be something that after weeks of being stuck in the house during COVID-19, many people could feel the same way, making this film ultra-important and relevant.

Larson won Best Actress at the Academy Awards in 2016 and there were calls from some critics wanting the then-nine-year-old Tremblay to be considered among the acting nominations that year, too. The film is carried by the mother and son chemistry throughout and Room touches the heart and takes you to many places emotionally.
